According to the Volleyball Canada website, Canada defeated Finland three sets to zero in World Volleyball League action on Saturday night at the Stampede Corral in Calgary. The Canadian national men's volleyball team won by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-20, in front of an impressive crowd of 2,850, many showing their applause through thundersticks with the Canadian flag on them.

This was the first Canadian game in World Volleyball League action in 2014 and first home game since Canada defeated South Korea in straight sets, 25-23, 25-20, 25-20 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario on June 15, 2013. The Canadian team are coming off an excellent World Volleyball League season as they stunned Olympic champion Russia in five sets, 20-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-11 in final round play in Mar del Plata, Argentina on July 18.

On Saturday, the Canadian team was led by Gavin Schmitt of Grande Prairie, Alberta who recorded 16 points. Schmitt also led the Canadians with twelve attacks and three blocks. John Gordon Perrin of Creston, British Columbia was also in double figures in point totals as he registered ten points.

A major reason for the Canadian victory was their ability to capitalize on their opponents' errors. Canada scored 28 points because of Finnish errors, while Finland scored 16 points because of Canadian mistakes.

The Canadian team currently sits in second place in Pool C with a record of 1-0. Last week, Belgium picked up six points with a 30-28, 25-19, 25-21 win over Australia on May 23 and then a 23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-16 win over Australia on May 25. In order for Canada to advance to the second round, they need to finish in the top two of their group or be ahead of both Belgium and Finland in Pool C action. Canada will play Finland again Sunday night in Calgary.
