Canada's U-17 men breeze past Trinidad and Tobago

Goals from Marco Dominguez-Ramirez and Jordan Hamilton proved the difference as Canada notched a comfortable 2-0 win yesterday over Trinidad and Tobago in the opening match of the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship at La Chorerra, Panama.

Dominguez-Ramirez profited from a clever set-piece routine as he thumped a fine strike into the top corner to put Canada up 1-0 during the 41st minute.

Hamilton then sealed the victory for the Canadians when he finished off his own rebound after being played in by Hanson Boakai in the 59th minute.

“Today it was all about getting the three points and we did that,” said Canada’s U-17 head coach Sean Fleming. “We knew it would be difficult and we faced some challenging moments - but I was pleased with how we kept our composure.

“Now it is about focusing on how we can improve ahead of our second game against Costa Rica.”

The win moves Canada into first place in Group B.

Trinidad and Tobago will meet Costa Rica in the group's second-match on April 8 before Canada takes on the Costa Ricans to close out play in the three-team pool on April 10.

The top two teams from the group advance to the all-important quarter-final stage that determines which four CONCACAF teams will qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup UAE 2013.
