Canada avoids colossal upset against Latvia in Olympic hockey

According to the Sochi 2014 website, the Canadian national men's hockey team avoided a national crisis on Wednesday by defeating Latvia 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the Olympic men's hockey tournament.

Shea Weber of the Nashville Predators scored the game winning goal at 13:06 of the third period to break a 1-1 deadlock.

Patrick Sharp of the Chicago Blackhawks opened the scoring for Canada at 13:37 of the first period before Lauris Darzins tied the scoring on the breakaway past Carey Price.

Team Canada dominated the hockey game, but Kristers Gudlevskis played the game of the ages as he made 55 saves on 57 attempts. Many of the Canadian shots were of very high quality.

Canada will now play the United States in one semi-final (Friday, CBC, 10:00 a.m. mountain time) , with Sweden playing Finland in the other semi-final (Friday, CBC, 5:00 a.m. mountain time). The United States beat the Czech Republic 5-2, Finland shocked Russia 3-1 and Sweden blanked Slovenia 5-0 in the other quarterfinals.
