Can we forget about Mayfield and just race?

I like Jeremy Mayfield. I’ve met and spoken with him on several occasions and he’s always seemed to be a good hearted person who just wants to race cars.

But now Mayfield is at the center of storm that seems to build every hour and threatens to overshadow an otherwise great sport.Jeremy Mayfield, left, and his attorney Bill Diehl, right, talk with reporters after meeting with NASCAR officials in Concord, N.C., Thursday, May 21, 2009. Mayfield might have to take legal action to get his suspension lifted. Diehl said the meeting was cordial but did not get them any closer to resolving the issue. Let’s face it, while he may be talented and has won some races in his past, Mayfield is not the superstar driver that a Gordon, Johnson or Earnhardt is. He’s now an owner-driver racing second-rate equipment, always finishing in the back and not even making most races. And now he’s alleged to have been caught using drugs.

While the debate rages over what the drug tested positive was or whether it’s even true and might even be just a false positive, the rest of the competitors, the majority of NASCAR try to get on with the business at hand, and that’s racing. Is there a cause for concern? Sure. No racer wants a fellow driver to be under the influence of anything but adrenaline when they are racing. But truth be told drivers know they are subject to testing at any time and if caught a career they took years to build could be gone in a flash.

Do you really think a marquee driver the likes of a Gordon or an Earnhardt would even think about using anything other then an aspirin? Of course not, there’s too much at stake.

If Mayfield is proven to have used a recreational drug, cocaine or pot for instance, then shame on him, see you later man. But if not then let the mistakes be laid out on the table, dealt with and then let’s move on.

Until the final truth is revealed though can we just go race? All the breaking news updates about Mayfield’s lawyer sneezing and NASCAR not putting out its list, are things that most those in NASCAR and the fans could care less about. They want more news about their driver’s chances of winning this weekend, not that Claritin D might show up positive in a urine test.

For years NASCAR has been known as a ‘clean’ sport. There have never been the types of scandals seen in other sports, far from it. No one fighting dogs, or shooting cops, trafficking cocaine, nothing like that. Now a driver who is most likely past his prime might have taken a toke on a joint. Ooh Katie bar the door.

Welcome to the 21st Century NASCAR fans, if that’s the worst scandal to ever come your way consider yourself lucky.

Can we go race now please?

get real! Do you honestly think that NASCAR would ever test Gordon or Jr? They are the money makers for NASCAR. If they did and if Jr. tested positive for something, they would cover it up because they can't afford to lose him. We all know he has the reputation of a party boy. Do you seriously believe that he hasn't ever taken a banned substance? Get real people.

I don't think we can let go of the Mayfield story and just go racing. Someone is lying here and that's what we want to know. I don't need to know what the exact drug was but I do want to know who is lying.

Your article is why this can't be put behind us and we just go on. You refer to Jeremy as a driver probably past his prime who might have taken a toke on a joint.

You know it was pot the test found so you made that statement, correct?
Jeremy being past his prime means that is the reason this crap is no longer important?

If you as a reporter, a supplier of truth and facts cannot see what is at stake in this issue then something is very wrong. NASCARS statements have tripped all over thems

Jeremy didnot use drugs. There is more to the story. We are talking about Jeremy's career in racing. The fiasco being done by nascrap, needs to be challanged, and Jeremy needs his name cleared so that he can race.
If your name was being called a druggie, would you sweep it under the rug, because you don't want to read about it anymore? NO you wouldn't, any more than Jeremy is. Jeremy is a racer, wants to race. Jeremy wants to get his name cleared so that he can race, and live his life, not havin

Are you kidding? Mayfield has gotten the death penalty from NASCAR. The public has serious questions and NASCAR is saying go away. We are NASCAR and we only answer to god (aka NASCAR). We don't need to tell you or the drivers what they can or cannot take.
This is America. On a weekend when we should be enjoying the freedom people have died for, you're telling us to shut up. Be nice little surfs and listen to the Dictator....NASCAR.
Are you a puppet or just kissing some serious rearend?

Greg, you are obviously past your prime. Put the paper and pencil down and back away from your computer.
Whats sad is that you don't think this is important. Someones LIFE!

I believe there is more to this then what NASCAR is providing. If JM used drugs, state it and move on... I beileve other drivers might be affected with other things similar to what JM took or takes, such as Gordon, Johnson, Stewart... But because they are what brings the money into their pockets, they are not stating exactly what the drug was that created JM a positive... NASCAR has always been about money. If JM is guilty then let all know what the issue was!!!

who the h... does nascar think they are? i think it's about time that somebody stepped in here and put these money hungry, power hungry idiots in their place, they can just ruin a mans career and not even discuss with him what he is accused of taking is ludacriss,Jeremy fight these a..holes all the way bud someone has got to bring them down a peg or two,all they know how to do is pass out rediculessly outragious fines and they say this money goes to charity........ right,
