I was intrigued to discover a new book by career expert Nicole Williams entitled “Girl on Top”, which shows women how to apply successful dating tactics to job searches to obtain a more fulfilling career.
She describes the process in detail, encouraging women to “follow your heart” but also be willing to “play the field” when it comes to discovering work that will be “the love of your life”. The course to happiness is laid out, from job courtship to dating and eventually marriage. Marriage to a career, that is.
Does this sound vaguely familiar? Perhaps because a few years back, Harvard MBA Rachel Greenwald came out with her book, “Find a Husband After 35”, which employs business strategy in searching for the man of your dreams.
I am open to new tactics in improving both my dating life and career, but if neither one is going particularly well despite hard work and dedication, how can I build on one using resources from the other? I admit to being skeptical, but Williams’ writing is fresh, funny, and full of insight. She discusses the everyday fears surrounding leaving a comfortable, secure job for something that is more inspiring but not necessarily a sure bet. She also advises women on what to do if you have no idea where your passion lies.
“Girl on Top” is a reminder that we should not settle for a career or romantic partner that is “fine for now”, despite our fears of never finding something or someone better. Rather, we should continue to follow our hearts, dream big, and do the work in creating new opportunities. These actions will eventually lead us to passion and excitement, which are worth the risks along the way.
