The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. There are over 70 organized prayer events throughout the state of NJ listed on the website www.nationaldayofprayer.org. The attendance and participation from local clergy and lay people will have a significant impact upon the spiritual future of our nation. America is divided over policies, politics, and birth certificates. However, over the past 24 hours there has been great participation and attendance at various and spontaneous “Bin Laden is dead celebrations” across this country.
The National Day of Prayer and prayer gatherings in general have a hard time attracting a crowd. Americans like to rejoice in victory but not fight the spiritual battles through prayer and persistence. America has the opportunity to show the world that we are not those that gather in jubilation with sweet drunken songs of pride over the death and the immediate eternal consequences that for eternity will follow Osama Bin Laden. America has the opportunity to show the world that we are those that can solemnly bow our heads and hope to heaven that we may prosper and be in peace if at all possible with other men and nations.
The death of Osama Bin Laden is biblical. Jesus said, “they that take the sword shall die by the sword” Matthew 26:52. The book of Romans lays out the job description of our government and it was not social services in verse 4 “ For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer”. May the death of one man not cause premature celebration when the true enemy of our souls and the moral conscience of our nation, is still walking around as a roaring lion. The National Day of Prayer must excel in numbers above the grassroots outpouring of emotion that is caught on camera and displayed across cable news programs this infamous day of May 1st (also the day Hitler was announced dead to the world in 1945).
