The year is 1939 and the movie Mr. Smith goes to Washington is playing in the theaters. Our country is at it's worst since the days of the American Revolution. The Great Depression has been going on for some seven to eights years now. The world is about to become at war amongst itself. An actor who is not very well known by the name of James Stewart is about to have a role of a lifetime. It's funny Jimmie Stewart had many of these roles.
He would play a dupe by the name of Jefferson Smith. An innocent amongst all the wolves of Washington. He would be recently appointed due to the death of a longtime Senator from his state. He would be given a very simple assignment that would turn him into a star. Oh am I mixing reality with art. Jefferson Smith would give a speech of a lifetime. He would filibuster in the U.S. Senate to push for something that he believed in passionately.
Yes and Jimmie Stewart would become a star after this movie.
Now let's jump ahead to September 2013 and a junior Senator from Texas by the name of Ted Cruz would filibuster the senate for 21 hours. All he wants is to try to get rid of Obama care. Our government is about to shut down and this Senator would talk for 21 hours about such things as Green Eggs and Ham, a children's book. This Senator is part of a Congress that has really done very little since the beginning of this year. Now some three days away we are looking at our Government shutting down and it's because of idiots like Cruz. There was no passion in this man's voice when he spoke for so long. This health care package is going to go on to become law anyhow and this junior Senator has the audacity to stand up before the world and speak of green eggs and ham.
I feel when Senators are junior Senators they should have to watch the master Jefferson Smith aka Jimmie Stewart and learn. You must have passion in your voice if you want to sway someone.
We need Jefferson Smith to come into the Senate and passionately speak about the wrongs and make them right. Ted Cruz needs to go back to Texas and never be heard from again.
