Can Pacquiao vs. Mayweather live up to the hype?

Manny is rarely in a boring fight (AP Photo)

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather are the biggest names in boxing today. Not only that but the hype surrounding their eventual meeting has transcended the usual fight fans and even out beyond the casual fans who might catch the bigger fight cards.

For the first time in a long time boxing is back on the front pages, and new fans are being exposed to a sport that many had written off as slowly dying only a couple of years ago. With the still suffering heavyweight division, the rise of mixed martial arts and the ever present resentment of the ABC titles in every weight class, boxing was on its knees. Fast forward to the present day and we have two pound for pound kings facing off in the biggest fight in history.

After all the build up and attention that the fight is being given though, the one question remaining is whether the fight itself will actually be very entertaining to most of the fans?

Sure for the hardcore fans, the fact that the pound for pound title is at stake, not to mention that Floyd's unbeaten record is on the line will be enough. That is to say no matter how the actual fight turns out they will be happy with the event. Those who only catch the odd boxing card might not be so easily placated though, and for a lot of the new fans this fight will attract, only an exciting display will suffice.

The big gamble in trying to predict how the fight will turn out is that we basically have one of the most exciting fighters in the world against one of the most boring. While both are unquestionably effective, Manny puts on a show while Floyd outclasses with his technique. In short most think we will either have a 12 round shut out from Floyd or a brutal battering from Manny, and not anything in between.

Floyd always does just enough (AP Photo)

If Floyd wins the fight, then expect a snoozer. A lot of the outcome will depend on which man is the faster when they both get into the ring, and a good case can be made for either at this stage.

Should Floyd be the faster though, and be able to keep up with Manny's all out attacks and odd angled punches, a decision is the only place this one is heading.

Mayweather has never been a big puncher, and has never been one to take a risk when grinding out a decision will do. He also throws fewer punches than a heavyweight in some of his fights, pot shotting his way to victory without ever pushing either himself or his opponent.

Despite the fact that there has been a lot of smack talk from the Mayweather clan during the build up to this fight, I get the feeling Floyd himself isn't really that emotionally involved. No matter what gets said by either of them Floyd will always fight the same when he gets in there with a pit-bull like Manny.

Manny is all or nothing (AP Photo)

If Manny wins, there are two possible scenarios I can see that the fight could take. The first is that Manny simply blitzes Floyd in the first few rounds.

Unlike Manny and his coach Roach game plans, Floyd tends to go in cold and take a few rounds to feel out his opponent. When he has the rhythm and timing figured out, he takes over and starts to rack up the rounds and score points. If Manny presses him hard before he has settled into his comfort zone, then he may well overwhelm him and get a quick knockout.

The other scenario that I can see playing out in Manny's favor is a thorough domination of 'money' with Floyd hanging on to lose on the scorecards. In this case even after taking a few rounds to try to work Manny out, Floyd finds himself too slow to get out of the way of all Manny's punches.

The fact that Manny puts out such a high volume of punches and that he hits so hard will no doubt mean that Floyd will get hit more than usual. Even though he might win several of the rounds, Manny will do more of the damage and Floyd will eventually get worn down as Manny gets stronger. Not to mention that if Manny can land a decent amount of punches on Floyd, then Mayweather's own pot shots won't be enough to win him the fight, perhaps pushing him into the unfamiliar territory of being behind on the scorecards.

POOR Manny when Floyd K.O.'s him Manny won't even know what Direction is the Philippines.hahahahaha!.

  • marlogwapo 2 years ago

that is if Mayweather can knockout Pacquiao. Cotto can't KO Pacquiao, so I highly doubt that Mayweather can.

in all honesty, Pacquiao will win by KO during midrounds.

  • YO MOMMA 2 years ago

All of a sudden mayweather has knockout power?!? Mayweather's gameplan won't do him any good once he eats a hard left from manny. He can go reevaluate adapt to that all he wants cause there's more that will come as the fight goes on.

  • BOIEMACHO 2 years ago

After third rounds, Cheaterweather will quit or otherwise Pacman will kill him. RIP cheater.

pacman will beat mayweather easily that's why they agree to fight at 147lbs roach knows it.

  • lil round penoy 2 years ago

I think the biggest opponent of manny is himself on this fight. And if manny find his range in early rounds floyd should prss the panic button, he should use the tactics of cotto and that is back pedaling, or else he might not gonna make it in the last round.

  • ryan Acosta of D. Ledesma City 2 years ago

Im a fan of floyd! i mean pinkfloyd "the wall".. i agree with you chuppa kabras! little floyd will knock him off! Shut up Welson!

Talk smack all you want about Manny at the end of the night Manny is still regarded by almost everyone as the exciting (yea thats right hes the DRAW), Pound for Pound Fighter in the world. All these hater can do is bad mouth his legendary status. Manny doesn't need to fight PBF to secure his status, Mayweather on the other hand NEEDS Manny for he is too scared to fight Mosley, Margarito, Paul Williams and Cotto to secure his legitimacy in the welterweight and the last 5 years he's been campaining in the division. Manny has beated enough legends while PBF has ducked enough of them. Talk is cheap Mayweather fans just like your IDOL and his ignant family.

latest news is that floyd jr. is threatening to pull out of the match because of weight issues. what a big chicken!!! a welterweight match should be set at the welterweight limit. if he can't make weight, then he should fight super welters instead.

  • STEVE 2 years ago

MAYWEATHER JR. WILL DUCK PACQUIAO JUST LIKE HE DUCK MARGARITO,COTTO,WILLIAM,MOSLEY ETC.

  • isidro 2 years ago

Mayweather won't change his style that is really his comfort zone in his head.Thinking that nobody can read him at all.
His fight with Marquez doesn't mean anything to prove that he beat the former pound4pound number two because of his great skills.Probably if after dominating a bloated Marquez from the early round and even knocking Marquez down on the canvass,in the latter rounds he should finish the fight with a knock out to make a great statement that he is back. But really what happened after his unanimous decision win against Marquez, the more his haters increased in numbers up to the point that a radio DJ really gave it to him without a second thought.Going back to Pacquiao vs Mayweather coming fight if any,Roach will be masteminding a great gameplan and Pacquiao as always will execute it beautifully.Thay will make the fight hype to materialized not coming from both of them.

Floyd will fight Ivan Calderon cause psychologically he can't afford to lose with Pacquiao, Mosley, Cotto, Margarito or Williams. - Arum

  • kibitzer 2 years ago

Pacman's key to victory has just been divulge by the author:

Floyd is a slow starter just like Cotto. Floyd is accustomed of seizing up his opponent before making an adjustment of his own. Floyd sets his feet too wide enough for him to lean backward when being attacked and finally, Floyd uses his famous 'shoulder roll' to deflect punches.

Those are exactly what Pac's corner will 'attacked' on fight night:

Swarm Floyd with volume of solid punches early. Take away Floyd's comfort zone early. Take away Floyd's confidence early. Throw those blinding out-of-angle shots to make Floyd's fighting stance ineffective. Hit Floyd hard in the shoulder whenever he do 'shoulder roll' until the shoulder blades duslocates AGAIN!!!!

Pac and Floyd both has fast hands. Pac's hands packs more power. Pac's footwork are faster than floyd's but floyd will beat Pac because he's got more speed in 'running'.

MAYWEATHERS', PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTHS ARE!!!!!

  • dtfernando 2 years ago

Floydie can put all his opponents to sleep by making them wait for him to punch. Even a normally aggressive Marquez looked like a shot pigeon when Floydie made it clear that 5 to 10 solidly landed punches versus 1 to 2 punches for Marquez was all the audience can expect for the next five thousand years of Mayweather boxing. The real danger for Pacquiao is that he may completely forget that there's supposed to be a boxing match between him and Floydie.

  • kibitzer 2 years ago

I already placed mine: 5gran for Pac

No arguments please...... just place your money where your 'Balls' are.....

Floyd is only a Celebrity Figure in boxing. Its only the media than defines him as Great selling them to people and stupid boxing fans buy to this kind of pulicity! none of his fights shows he is Great! The quality of his opponents were Crap.. He's just an Actor gaining money by being Famous, he should be in Entertainment Wrestling!! Manny will Kill him... Watch out Floydie...

jr! if you don't have the balls to fight manny then better wear skirts, put up beauty saloon and dance the LAMBADA.your loud mouth is better than your jab! i swear!

  • GEORGE 2 years ago

Floyd will show up in a knight armor or just in a samurai armor vest o protect himself from Manny's pierce assaults. He doesn't care about people laughing at him as long as he doesn't get hurt so bad. He can swallow defeat but not having broken ribs and nose, busted face and tasting his own blood all night. He's not familiar with this kind of death fighting, all he knew was dancing with the stars and wrestling and scaring midgets. Too bad he will be facing a giant killer midget now and he scared, really scared if not only because of the money which is also his life he will not fight this guy all his life.

one of the main scenarios of the pacquiao-mayweather fight is to catch me if you can for this gayrunner. pacquiao should train more in jackrabbit sprints so as to match the running skills of floydie inside the ring.

Looks like Floyd Jr. is having 2nd thoughts about this fight and is finding excuses to not fight PacMan.
I'm telling you........ once Team Pacquaio figure out how to negate Mayweather's 'grab & hold' tactics, they got nothing.
    - shoulder roll does not score points;
    - Pac is a stronger & better puncher than Floyd;
    - someone said uppercut will work against Floyd BUT how when he's tying u up?????????????????

Manny Pacquiao is going to kill Floyd jr.!! Nobody has any idea how bad Pacquiao wanna scrap this guy. I strongly feel that Pacquiao is going for the fastkill like a texas bacolod topnotch fighting cock!! This is really scary for Mayweather. As soon as Manny hears the bell in very 1st. look out!!! its not going to be pretty.

Manny Pacquiao can do and perform.

Sorry Floyd, Can't see this fight lasting long. You can't escape what's going to be coming your way. I don't see any problem for Manny. Manny is just as quick with more power and willingness to FIGHT! He won't let you escape.

  • alberto 2 years ago

floyd is gonna chop, chop manny til he is dead..

  • Chicago guy 2 years ago

Pacquiao want this fight very badly, now Mayweathers need to prove all what they said inside the ring without unnecessary excuses.

  • fred w 2 years ago

Ask Hatton, Marquez, Cotto, De La Hoya, Diaz, Barrera, Morales and so on who they would rather fight and I bet they all FEEL Mayweather. Manny hurts people Floyd dosen't! You should have STAYED retired Floyd.

  • Mad Conad 2 years ago

You Guys should all be here after the fight. Manny is an over rated Gatti. Nothing more. The only difference between manny and gatti is manny got better. His matches are still handpicked. That's the way he beat hatton and Delahoya and Cotto. They were made for him. The scary thing is that we know what Manny can do but you have no ideal what Floyd can do. You have not seen his best. You don't even know how much power he has, you only postulate a certain given based on the opinions of others. Just because a corvette runs at 60 most times doesn't mean (if it has too) it can't reach 180+. Fans are foolish, you honestly believe that a fighter who has been taught and training to throw punches since he was two has no power! Floyd has as much power as manny if not more and the scary thing is that should he be forced to use it, his skill and technique would insure Manny's retirement.

  • Huna 2 years ago

To Mad Conrad, I only wish Mayweather truly believed in himself as much as you do, Fact is this fight is not going to happen, Mayweather is scared of Manny. Mayweathers camp now wants both to take a tune up fight first, his with Matthew Hatton, who is a bum, and Pacman with Yuri Foreman recognized as the weakest 154 pounder, as to Manny being overrated, I wish I had a dollar for everytime someone like you said that, I'd have more money than the Sultan of Brunei. If Mayweather ever did drug himself enough to get in the ring, he would pull a "DURAN-No Mas" and quit and walk out of the ring as soon as Manny turn the tide and broke him down. Mayweather is that big of a punk. Now he wants wiggle room between 147 and 154, Why? He weighed 146 for the Marquez fight. Mayweather will not go into the ring with anyone with anything less than a Royal Flush hidden in his sleeve. Mayweather is an embarassment to the sport.

I just want to tell the pacman that be smart fighting gayweather. Today there's an article that gayweather have excuses each and everyday. Don't be fooled by that cause what I've heard is he's practicing already for the fight in case. But they are still finding ways to get out of this fight. I told you guys that gayweather will do everything if not stop this fight, he will do everything to win, and if he loose I know he will do something about to discredit the pacman by manipulating his drug test.

  • Eddie 2 years ago

Sorry fight fans. This fight won't happen. Why? The Mayweather camp always brings up new problems when other problems are solved or are close to be solved. It all starts with an early date, a steroid or PED accusation. Then the gloves, followed by the venue (not wanting to fight on an outdoor stadium). Duh, the Cowboy's Arena has a retractable roof. What about the proposed "temporary outdoor arena" to be constructed in Vegas? Isn't that outdoor? Then the Olympic standard testing. Just when things were looking brighter... The issue of the penalty of more than the 600K USD/pound as agreed during the Mayweather - Marquez fight when coming on to the fight overweight. Why? Planning to come way above the the 147 lbs limit? Strange. Someone is trying really hard as not to make this happen. Don't need to be a genius to figure it out. I smell a "duck". Quack quack quack.

    To media outfits worldwide:
No matter what survey or voting system you may run to hype up your chosen champs, but historical records have proven otherwise.
The undisputed boxing historical fact: There's only one fighter in history to become: 1) the legitimate champion in 7 weight divisions; 2) legitimate lineal champion in 4 weight divisions, 3) only boxing champ to have destroyed the most number of hall-of-famers totalling 6 world champions in different weight divisions... and that's no other than --- Emmanuel "Manny/The Pacman" Dapidran Paquiao of the Philippines!
Therefore, the real, legitimate and historically-accurate Greatest Fighters of All Time goes to:
No. 1 - Manny Pacquiao (7 weight division champ)
No. 2 - Oscar de la Hoya (6 weight division champ)
No. 3 - Floyd Mayweather & Sugar Ray Leonard (5 weight division champs)
Nobody can ever rewrite history. If you want to get respect, you must earn it as it happen in history and not get it thru votes!

THEN WHAT FLOYD IS DOING?..HAAAA? IF HE IS MAN ENOUGHT HE WILL ACCEPT THE FIGHT WITHOUT ANY ALIBI EVERYTHING IS ON HIS FAVOR WHAT ELSE A GREAT FIGHTER COULD ASK?
