As I sat in the audience of the Ricki Lake show, being invited on as the clinical sexologist professional guest, I had a few opinions of my own!

Some open marriages do and can work. In my opinion the best rule of thumb in maintaining an open marriage is to have open communication with your spouse. In an open marriage at any one given time things can change. That is why checking in with your spouse regularly and having some guide lines is crucial in maintaining the marriage itself, before committing to an open marriage.
The main couple interviewed on the Ricky Lake Show is Carl and Kenya they were at one time in a monogamous marriage for 12 years before they began to discuss the option of an open marriage. They have developed their own set of guidelines to live by called “Progressive Love”. This type of arrangement may work for them and other couples. but, for some it can also be the demise of their marriage. The one fact that I stress to my clients who are thinking of being in an open marriage is that both husband and wife must want to equally be a part of this type of life style. Having the freedom to have sex with other people, while still being married can bring up feeling of jealousy and insecurity, these feeling have to be addressed in order to make the open marriage work.
The other topic that was discussed is extended family and children, how do these couples in open marriages deal with close family and children in their lives. This is one of the heated conversations that unfolds on the show!
