Can ‘Once Upon A Time’s’ Mad Hatter carry his own series? ABC thinks so

The show’s beloved character certainly has the draw of the crowd and ABC had originally intended on using that to its advantage by casting Sebastian Shaw – the actor who played the forlorn hatter on “Once Upon A Time” for six episodes. However, as it turns out, he is not available to commit to a series at this time. He is currently appearing in “Picnic” on Broadway and then has to begin training for a role in “Captain America.”

Deadline says may be filming a presentation piece of short length for consideration. Another possibility is the Mad Hatter could return to “Once Upon A Time” later this season as a test. If it works and the sow gets the numbers it needs as has happened in the past when this character appears, it could serve as a ‘backdoor’ pilot that could ultimately launch the new series.

“OUAT” has a history of casting guest stars with series options so this would not be terribly unusual. It gives the network the option of turning guest stars into regulars if their characters strike the right chord with viewers. Those who have been optined into the show in the past include Emile de Ravin (Belle), Meghan Ory (Red Riding Hood), and Colin O’Donoghue (Captain Hook).

Would you watch a new series featuring the Mad Hatter? Would it matter if the show had a new actor?

Catch “Once Upon A Time” on Sundays at 7 p.m. on ABC.
