Raising test scores, teaching to the test, getting the numbers up, teaching every student the same way…Is this what education is about or is this where education is heading? It seems that when one moves from teacher to administrator, they forget about who is important and focus on what is important. As a teacher, one focuses on the who, as opposed to the what. The who, being those students who the teacher is responsible for motivating and educating. The students who learn to think and be all they can be. The students who grasp and grow because of the methods and motivation they receive from that teacher who pours himself or herself into each and every student and never gives up on them. When one moves from teaching to administrating, they forget about the who, and focus on the what, which eventually becomes a disservice to all. The what, being state testing, numbers, and canned curriculum that are ‘guaranteed’ to raise the numbers? When one moves from teaching to administrating, remember it is the who and not the what who are the most important and the reason you do your job.
