Smart homes, or domotics, can provide monitoring and alert emergency services in the event of illness or accidents, according to a 2009 study.
Technology monitors safety while providing privacy
The University of Missouri's Sinclair School of Nursing and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering conducted a study to evaluate the use of artificial intelligence in elder-care. The technology that provides the in-home monitoring is powered by fuzzy logic, a type of AI. The home monitoring system uses a number of cameras to monitor the residents of a home, then translates the images to abstract forms to protect the resident's privacy.
With AI technology, a smart home system can evaluate the movements and habits of elderly residents to alert a nurse in the event of a fall or illness, without invasive visits and a loss of independence. Voice-activated appliances can also improve the quality of life for an elderly or mobility-challenged homeowner.
