Camping Returns to Metroparks This Summer (Photos)

That recent gas price hike may be a memory, but don't worry, it'll be back this summer, count on it. If you want to save a bit of cash and still have fun camping with the family, the Huron-Clinton Metroparks has the solution.

The system is once again offering economical camping at several of its parks this summer.

Stony Creek Metropark is offering seven family-friendly camping weekends and fall at 45 rustic campsites nestled among towering oak trees at its new Ridgewood Campground.

Make your reservations now to camp during these special weekends to be held on May 31 – June 2, June 21 – 23, July 12 – 14, July 26 – 28, Aug. 9 –11, Aug. 30 – Sept. 2 and Oct. 11 –13.
The campground is perfect for families looking for a secluded place to camp just a short walk in the woods from beautiful Stony Creek Lake. It’s also an easy walk to the park’s hike/bike trail, which circles the lake and provides access to most park facilities.

The campground is just one mile from the park’s Eastwood Beach, and two miles from the Nature Center.

It features 43 standard campsites, of which two are handicap-accessible and four are primitive walk-in only. The campground also has two bigger, premium sites which can accommodate more tents or campers than the standard sites.

To provide a quiet, more natural experience, generators will only be allowed at four designated sites, including those that are handicap-accessible. The October family camping weekend will be Halloween-themed.

The standard campsites can accommodate up to one camper and two tents. Only tents are allowed at the primitive sites. Up to two campers and three tents, or five tents (no campers), are allowed at the premium sites.

The standard campsite fee is $40 per weekend; the premium campsite fee is $80 per weekend. For the three-day Labor Day Weekend, campsites go for $20 per night/standard site, and $40/night premium site, two-night minimum. Park entry is charged separately. Campers will have 24-hour access to restrooms, with showers available at the Eastwood Beach bathhouse. Tents, campers and motor homes are allowed but there are no hookups (water or electricity) available at the campsites. Check-in time starts at noon on Friday; checkout is by 6 p.m. Sunday.

Downriver Camping

At Lower Huron Metropark’s Walnut Grove Campground, family rustic camping, packed with fun and adventure for all ages, is available May 3 through mid-October.

Conveniently located near Belleville in Wayne County, the campground offers the excitement of a camping vacation without the time and expense of a trip up north.

Campers are encouraged to bring walking shoes, bikes and/or inline skates to use the paved hike-bike trail, which connects Lower Huron to Willow and Oakwoods Metroparks.

Fishing along the Huron River is easy to access at three fishing decks located within the park, as well as at the camp’s river shoreline. Basketball courts, a baseball diamond and tennis courts are also in the park, as well as a Par-3 golf course, which can be played for just $7 per person on the weekends, or $6 per person weekdays.

Tents, campers and motorhomes are allowed; two tents or one RV per site. No hookups (water or electricity) are available at the campsites.

Modern restrooms are available within the campground. Showers are available 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Turtle Cove Aquatic Center Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day.

Campsites can be reserved for a $20/day fee, which does not include park entry ($5 daily or $25 annual). Reservations are now being taken.
