Camp Pendleton Marine Lcpl. Matthew Rodriguez killed in Helmand Province

The last combat death reported from Afghanistan was released by the Department of Defense Nov. 18; until this morning’s announcement that Lance Cpl. Matthew R. Rodriguez, 19, of Fairhaven, Mass., died Dec. 11, 2013, while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province.

Lcpl. Rodriguez was assigned to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

There were no details released surrounding the circumstances of his death, nor was there any information on other Marines who might have been wounded in this incident.

Lcpl. Rodriguez’s death brings to 2,154 the number of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan since the war began in 2001.

The family has not had time to finalize arrangements for their Marine.
