“Camp” is rockin’ at the Baldwin

The rockin’ beats heard outside the walls of the Baldwin Theatre are those of Stagecrafters Youth Theatre presenting the regional premiere of Disney’s Camp Rock – The Musical. The upbeat musical, performed by youth from the tri-county area, runs July 22 through 31 at the Baldwin Theatre, 415 S. Lafayette in downtown Royal Oak.

Audiences will be transported to Camp Rock – the ultimate summer camp for aspiring musicians. If the name seems familiar, the musical is the stage adaptation of Disney Channel’s “Camp Rock” movies that premiered in 2008 and 2010. The story is based on “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” and features more than a dozen songs, including the pop hits  “This Is Me,” “Can’t Back Down,” “It’s On,” and “We Rock.”

When Camp Rock opens for the summer, Mitchie Torres (Kristen Zublick of Royal Oak) arrives and greets her friends from last summer. Mitchie breaks into song and is joined by the Connect 3’s lead singer Shane Gray (Joe Cavanaugh of Madison Heights) along with his brothers, Nate (Jake Zelinski of Rochester Hills) and Jason (Christian Lafata of Royal Oak). Tess Tyler (Christiana Perrault of Southfield) also joins in on the song.

This summer at camp is supposed to be all about the music and having the time of their lives. Camp Rock director, Brown Cesario (Philip DeVoe of Royal Oak) finds out that his rival and former bandmate Axel Turner (Max Sanders of Royal Oak) has set up a camp of his own, flashy Camp Star, just across the lake. Camp Rock’s very existence is now threatened by the new camp and to keep the doors open, Mitchie steps up, rallies her fellow Camp Rockers, and gets them into top shape for the ultimate showdown.

Linda Zublick of Royal Oak jumped at the chance to direct the show because of the dancing and the message that comes from the show. “Camp Rock is targeted to anyone who has ever dreamed of being a star, both adults and kids alike – whether singing, writing music, playing an instrument or dancing.  This show focuses on the importance of teamwork, and really hits home the message that it’s really not about being a star – it’s all about the music.  The contemporary songs and dance will really entertain all ages,” says Zublick.

Zublick co-choreographs the show with Stephanie Zielinski of Royal Oak. “This show has an usual amount of song and dance number for a youth theatre musical, so the challenge is having all 40 kids on stage at the same time and utilizing the stage space appropriately.  Watching the kids develop the ability to not only dance but sing a difficult song at the same time has been a true joy,” Zublick adds.

Advance tickets for performances are $6 youth and $10 adult.  Tickets may be purchased online at www.stagecrafters.org or by phone at 248-541-6430 using Visa and MasterCard. All seats are reserved.  If shows have not sold out, tickets can be purchased at the box office one hour prior to the performance for an additional $2.00 per ticket.
