Tuesday night, Cameron Dabaghi jumped off the Empire State Building and committed suicide. Dabaghi was a Yale University student from Austin, Texas. Dabaghi, 21, took a running start on the 86th floor of the Empire State Building in New York City. He leapt over the barrier on the observation deck and jumped. His body landed below near a Bank of America branch. Witnesses said that his sneakers and body were completely shattered.
That puts the number of people who have committed suicide by jumping off the Empire State Building to more than 30. A tall barrier was placed on the observation deck so that people cannot jump, and clearly the barrier will need to be even higher.
In 1978, Richard Seiden, published a study of 515 people who were prevented from committing suicide, and found that only 6% later actually committed suicide. Seiden was a behavioral science professor at UC Berkeley. He gathered that people who want to commit suicide will find a way to do so.
In Utah, the suicide rate for men ages 15-24 is the highest in the nation, according to a 2006 article by the Deseret News, entitled “Deadly Taboo: Youth suicide an epidemic that many in Utah prefer to ignore”.

There are nationally recognized and research supported recommendations for how to report about suicide safely and responsibly. Please visit www.afsp.org/media. The research by Sneiden proved that people would NOT go on to try suicide somewhere else. Barriers work to prevent suicide.
TV last night aired a show in which a young man, "took a running jump," and leaped from a tall bldg. to his death.
