Cambridge Saddle Club Upcoming Events

The Cambridge Saddle Club, the oldest organized riding club in Washington County hosts its final 2009 horse show on September 13th with the first class beginning at 8:30am.

Located at 5 Fish Hatchery Road, the Cambridge Saddle Club shows feature over 36 classes including halter, hunt seat, western and performance events. Each year the shows are held on the second Sunday of each month from May through October. The 10 acre show facility includes two outdoor arenas, a Club House and an announcer’s booth. Ample room is available for truck and trailer access.

In addition to the monthly horse shows, the Cambridge Saddle Club hosts Gymkhana Events on the 3rd Saturday of each month and a Thursday night “Under The Lights” Gymkhana event on the 2nd & 4th Thursday of every month.

The Cambridge Saddle Club got its start nearly 50 years ago. “In 1948 or 1949, a bunch of ‘em who liked to trail ride together decided to form a club,” explained Joyce Bennett, member of 50+ years, “it started back then there weren’t any paved roads. The group would meet for a trail ride and occasionally a horse show.”

The club officially incorporated in 1949 and purchased the land at 5 Fish Hatchery Road for $400. Bill Bennett, Joyce’s husband, was elected President. “In 1950 Uncle Sam called and Bill had to leave,” Joyce recalled, “a few of the members asked if there was anything they could do while he was gone and his request was to build a club house.” By 1952, the club house was built and used for monthly meetings.

Of the 8 riding clubs formed during the 1940’s in Washington County, only the Cambridge Saddle Club is still in existence today. “Other clubs lost younger members after they moved away or got married, but we have held onto our membership and still have 50 members,” Bennett noted.

Staying with the true spirit of the original group, the Cambridge Saddle Club continues to host two organized trail rides per year at “Christ The King Spiritual Life Center” in Greenwich, NY. The rides last an hour and a half and include a BBQ lunch. The rides begin at 10 AM and are free. The cost is $10 to participate in the lunch. The ride (and lunch) is open to both members and non-members. Pre-reservation is required.

Membership is $12 to join and $12 annual dues for an individual member. Annual dues per family are $30. Contact Joyce Bennett via mail at PO Box 194 Cambridge, NY 12816 to join. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month in the club house.
