Calvin Borel has won the 2010 Santa Anita George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award.

Based on peer voting, the Woolf Award was announced by Santa Anita Park on February 20th by retired Hall of Fame jockey and television personality Gary Stevens (who won the Woolf Award in 1996).

What is the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award?

The Woolf Award honors Thoroughbred horse racing jockeys for outstanding professional careers and personal character. The award honors George Woolf, a famous jockey (known for riding Seabiscuit) who died in a Thoroughbred horse race at the famous Santa Anita Park racetrack in California.

The Woolf Award trophy is a replica of a life-sized statue of George Woolf, which stands in the Paddock Gardens area of the Santa Anita Park racetrack.

Calvin Borel will be the 61st Woolf Award recipient since the prize’s origin in 1950.

Who is Calvin Borel?

Fondly tagged “Bo-Rail” by his fans for his strategic racing along the inner rail during many of his Thoroughbred horse racing victories, Calvin Borel is a household name in racing. The 43-year-old Louisiana native (and now Kentucky resident), who stands at 5’5”, is well respected in his field, esteemed by top Thoroughbred horse trainers, owners and barn staffs.

The star jockey also rode Mine That Bird in his stunning 2009 Kentucky Derby come-from-behind win. Calvin Borel won the Kentucky Derby with Street Sense in 2007.

This year, Calvin Borel beat the following top jockey finalists to win the Woolf Award: Garrett Gomez, Randall Meier, Gallyn Mitchell and DeShawn Parker.

When will Calvin Borel receive the 2010 Woolf Award?

The Woolf Award will be presented in the spring in a special ceremony at Santa Anita Park racetrack.
