December is a very busy month at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons Maryland. Events kick off on December 2nd & 3rd with Solomons Christmas Walk that takes in the Garden in Lights and the lighted boat parade. Do your holiday shopping at the Museum Store where you can purchase books about Chesapeake Bay, and arts and crafts by local artisans.

On both evenings there will be musical performances by groups such as the Cosmic Flute Choir, Patuxent Voices, The Good Stuff and Southern Maryland Sound. The kids and the “kids at heart” will enjoy visits by Santa and the museum’s resident river otters Bubbles and Squeak.

The museum members’ party on Sunday December 4th will have festive decorations, holiday music, games, face painting and a visit from Santa bearing gifts.

Sea Squirts: Peek-a-Boo I See You takes place on December 8th and 15th is a great inter-active program that has kids searching for clues on what animals have been to the museum. It’s free and geared to kids up to three years old.

Children and adults can participate in the Gingerbread Lighthouse workshops on December 23rd. This popular program takes place at 11am and 2pm, cost is $2 and participants can sign up at the admission desk on the day of the workshop.

The rest of December is given over to teaching events such as You OTTER Know where interpreters talk about the museum’s North American sea otters and Jellyfish! an interpretive program about the slithery slimy Chesapeake Bay jellyfish.

In Clues to the Past museum staff give the history of some of the rare fossils from the museum’s extensive collection.

Turtle Talks allows everyone to get up close and personal with the four different kinds of turtles that are “residents” of the museum.

The museum pays homage to the start of the 100th anniversary of the War of 1812 with interactive exhibits and teaching sessions that tell of the role that southern Maryland took in the war and the important battles that were fought here.

Toys in the Lighthouse is a tour that kids can take of the museum’s Drum Point Lighthouse to learn what life was like a century ago for children who were stationed at the lighthouse.
