Calve wins World Cup gold in snowboarding

According to the Canadian Press on Saturday, Caroline Calve of Hull, Quebec won a gold medal in the women's parallel slalom snowboarding event at a World Cup event in Carezza, Italy.

The victory for Calve is significant because it comes less than two months from the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Calve defeated Yekaterina Ilyukhina of Russia, who won the silver medal in the women's parallel giant slalom at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, in the round of 16 by 1.56 seconds. Then Calve beat Ina Meschik of Austria by seven one-hundredths of a second in the quarterfinals, then Nadya Ochner of Italy in the semi-finals by 0.28 seconds before upsetting Russian world champion Yekaterina Tudegesheva in the final by 0.06 seconds. Selina Joerg of Germany won the bronze medal.

Calve won her third World Cup of her career. She previously won a parallel giant slalom snowboarding event in Careeza, Italy on December 21, 2011 and a parallel slalom snowboarding event in Moscow on February 23. 2013.
