Calm swimming, activities, and much more at Oleta River State Park

For the water enthusiast that is looking for an alternative to the ocean beach, Oleta River State Park in North Miami brings you placid lagoon waters for swimming. The white sand is flat and a little more firm here, not mushy like at the regular beach, though it depends on your preference. You may find small schools of tiny fish and boaters going by. For seniors or those that prefer to avoid the big waves that the ocean brings, this place is a wonderful solution.

It has many other benefits available too such as a park with a playground, fishing, hiking, youth camping, cabins, canoeing, canoe ramp, boat ramp, boating, picnic pavilion, concession, showers, restrooms, parking, three miles of paved trails for walkers and special 15 mile mountain bike trails.

After working up an appetite there is the Blue Marlin Fish House Restaurant which also has an inerpretive center about Oleta River's ecosystem and history. (It has outdoor seating and thought more of as a shack by customers who gave it good reviews on Yelp, includes photos of the food here.) Not only do you have a day of park and water activities followed by dining to replenish the energy, you also get a little education.

A social event called Wine Wednesday is an evening of wine and appetizers at the Blue Marlin Fish House followed by casual kayaking together.

With the many different activities to choose from, there should be something for everyone.
