Calling all Comic Book Fanatics in SW Florida!

The Center for the Arts of Bonita Springs is hosting an exhibition featuring the 'Golden Age of Comic Books', titled:"ZAP! POW! BAM! The Superhero: The Golden Age of Comic Books, 1938-1950" and is scheduled for opening (with reception) on Friday evening, March 2nd and running through April 28, 2012.

In the midst of the economic and political turmoil of the 1930s and 1940s, comic books offered America champions who shaped the values of an entire generation. Through never-before exhibited art and objects culled from private and institutional collections, ZAP! POW! BAM! The Superhero: The Golden Age of Comic Books, 1938-1950 explores the genesis of cultural icons such as Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman, and Captain America, and the ways that those figures shaped popular opinion. In conjunction with the Opening Reception on March 2, a campus-wide Open House will be held. The studios will be open for those wanting to walk through campus, or who want to show it to friends. Artists and instructors will be present selling artwork and giving demonstrations.

Originated by The William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum, the exhibition has been traveling throughout the United States since its debut in Atlanta in 2004. Not stopping anytime soon, this show will be touring the nation for months--possibly years to come.

The exhibition will feature rare vintage artwork, books, 1940s Hollywood movie serials and colorful interactive displays such as a vintage Batmobile™, a newsstand with comics, and costume stations that allow children to dress up as their favorite superhero or use a phone booth for a lightning-fast costume change.

Traveling Guest Curator Jerry Robinson brings a long history as a comic book industry insider to the exhibition. Working with Batman co-creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger, Robinson named Robin, Batman’s young protégé. Robinson also co-created The Joker, Batman’s nemesis and one of the first Super-Villains. His experience and personal contacts have presented The Breman with extraordinary access to original comic book materials, artists and collectors. (**trying to find out if Mr. Robinson is still traveling with the show)

I will be attending this show, as it was comic books that inspired me to draw along with my father's artistic influence. Comic books did provide a safe and healthy means for anyone's imagination to travel for a spell and possibly escape into a world of super powers and righting wrongs for the common good.

Society needs current role models, such as these illustrated wonders of enos ago. Kids need good news in their lives, positive role models and maybe to get back to books and less time on technology and games. Get the kids into art centers, they could become the next Piccasso or work for Disney one day. Drawing is a geat form of expression or just a nice break from the rest of the world. Developing an imagination is never a waste of time orenergy.

Why not show the youth of today that good can indeed prevail over all other things within society? Just an idea.
