Call to Action: Help Union Gospel Mission of Seattle

As reported on local news stations Komo 4 and the Seattle PI, the Union Gospel Mission of Seattle is asking the Seattle Community to help them with a need of 400-500 turkeys that will help provide thanksgiving meals to those who otherwise may not have a thanksgiving meal.

Shar, warehouse supervisor with the Union Gospel Mission, shared with the Seattle Multi-Faith examiner that this will help them in providing meals within the shelter and for those who are unable to get into the shelter and are out on the streets.

She also stated that these meals would be provided in the men and women’s shelter as well. They also help provide thanksgiving meals to various churches in the Metropolitan Seattle area. In addition to these meals, they also put together thanksgiving baskets for their senior ministry.

When asked if there are other needs than the turkeys, she shared that Union Gospel mainly needs turkeys, however if someone would like to donate other types of items to complete a thanksgiving meal, they will gladly accept these donations as well.

From the Seattle Post-Intelligencer article, the information to give to the Union Gospel Mission and help them out in supplying these thanksgiving meals is follows:

You can help provide these meals by dropping off food donations at the Mission's Men's Shelter at 318 Second Ave. South, near Pioneer Square. To make a financial contribution, please call 206-722-HOME (or 206-722-4663) or log on to www.ugm.org.

If, for financial reasons, one is not able to provide a turkey or make a financial donation to the Union Gospel Mission, they do accept volunteers as well. There are volunteer opportunities for individuals as well as volunteer opportunities for groups and churches.

In our volatile economic times, we ought to pull together as a faith community to help meet the needs of those who are less fortunate than we are. Through our means of service, and acts of kindness, we can help make a moment of thanksgiving a reality for those who may not otherwise have something to be thankful for in their lives.

It is only when we place another person’s need above our own that we are able to show our love and kindness for our fellow neighbors.
