'Call of Duty', 'Halo 4' and 'Minecraft' are the top 5 Xbox LIVE games in 2012

Microsoft revealed Tuesday how the Xbox LIVE standings for 2012 shook out with the most played Xbox 360 and Arcade games. Unsurprisingly, "Call of Duty" dominates the top charts but "Halo 4" and "Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition" are in the mix along with many others.

"Call of Duty: Black Ops II" takes the top spot as the most played Xbox 360 game for 2012 with its predecessor, "Modern Warfare 3", right behind it in the two hole. "Halo 4" has been slipping in the weekly charts while "Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition" has been surging but 343 Industries' franchise shooter was able to hold off the open-world sandbox title.

One thing to note about "Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition" is that it is the only Xbox LIVE Arcade title to make the top 20 overall games played.

Other notables for 2012 include "Battlefield 3" with a strong showing in its second year on the Xbox 360 in the number eight slot while "Borderlands 2" and "Assassin's Creed III" sit at 11 and 12.

Naturally, "Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition" sits atop the list of the top Arcade titles but "Trials: Evolution" and "The Walking Dead" had very strong showings in 2012 as they finished number two and three. Interestingly, "Castle Crashers" shows some serious longevity by ranking as the sixth most played Arcade title despite being released in 2008.
