Activision and Infinity Ward officially announced the Onslaught DLC Monday for Call of Duty: Ghosts on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC. The teaser trailer released Sunday for the add-on now makes sense as it was revealed that players will have the opportunity to take on the role of Michael Myers from the Halloween series of horror films. However, there are also new maps plus a new episodic narrative for the game's Extinction mode.
"We know our fans have an appetite for new gameplay content all year long, and the team here is committed to delivering a full season's worth of amazing new maps, weapons and more, starting with Onslaught in January," said Mark Rubin, Executive Producer at Infinity Ward. "This year will see an assortment of content for players to dig into, with new, uniquely themed maps, new multiplayer weapons, and an episodic Extinction story arc that introduces new characters, new locations, and new weapons as they try to uncover the genesis of the aliens' existence."
Onslaught will bring four small to medium-sized multiplayer maps which starts with horror film homage, "Fog." The map is set at eerie summer camp alongside the banks of a murky lake complete with flickering TVs, abandoned structures and a dark secret.
"If a player happens to find and complete a specific Field Order, they become the embodiment of evil and don the persona of one of cinema's most iconic horror characters, Michael Myers. Additionally, the entire soundscape changes to the eerily familiar Halloween Theme music so other players know to run for their lives," the Onslaught press release explains.
There's also a close-quarters map set on the California boardwalk called "BayView." It promises "fast-paced run-and-gun matches" with the danger of a "deadly artillery strike" that enemies can call-in from an offshore Naval Destroyer.
"Containment" is another small map which is set in a "war-torn Mexican village" that provides "elevated rooftop vantage points."
The fourth map, "Ignition," is inspired by Modern Warfare 2's "Scrapyard map and is set in an "aging Florida space launch facility." In addition to rockets crash landing onto the map, there are also "two separate rocket test engines sites that opposing forces can trigger, sending massive fireballs into the already intense firefights, and the failed launch of a massive rocket has a dramatic effect on the combat."
Meanwhile, the Extinction mode will receive the first in a four-part episodic narrative titled "Episode 1: Nightfall." Two new characters are introduced along with two new alien species - including a large boss character - and an exclusive weapon. According to Activision, "'Episode 1: Nightfall' is a fast and frenetic, action-packed continuation of the original Extinction experience in Call of Duty: Ghosts. Set in a remote facility hidden deep within the Alaskan wilderness, the shadowy Nightfall Program has been researching the origins of the newly revealed alien threat. A small recon team of elite soldiers must infiltrate the site to retrieve intel and exterminate the hordes of savage creatures, and along the way uncover a three-story tall terror unlike anything they've faced before."
Finally, the Onslaught DLC will pack the Maverick," a dual-purpose Assault Rifle or Sniper Rifle that players can choose how to use depending on their tactical needs."
Call of Duty: Ghosts - Onslaught will be released to the Xbox One and Xbox 360 first on Jan. 28 for $14.99 or for free as part of the Season Pass. The PS3, PS4 and PC release will arrive approximately a month later.
