Call of Duty continues to roll in both sales and online usage

The Call of Duty franchise continues to rule console video gaming, according to recent reports.

The latest in the franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, was the top selling game software for the month of January according to market research firm NPD Group.  In addition, Activision stated on Thursday that the overall series now has over 40 million montly active users with half of that number coming from the latest release.

The latest XBox Live stats release from Major Nelson also shows the CoD series continuing to lead the way.  The latest list of XBox Live Activity also came out on Thursday with Modern Warfare 3 in the lead followed by 2010's Call of Duty: Black Ops as the second-most played game on XBox Live during this time period.   2009's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 came in 7th in this latest ranking with 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 17th place.

The latest numbers at VGChartz.com shows Modern Warfare 3 with more than 25 million copies sold worldwide across all platforms, placing it's sales figures thus far around the same totals Black Ops gained in a full year of availability.

While the series will always have some vocal critics, Activision's first-person shooter series shows little evidence of a slowdown at this point.
