It's official! Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has been announced as part of the 2013 MLG winter season. With one of the most prolific and obvious agendas to bring e-sports "main stream," David Vonderhaar and the rest of the team at Treyarch have gone to great extents to ensure Black Ops 2's incorporation into this years MLG season.
“The global phenomenon of competitive gaming has reached a tipping point and I believe 2013 is going to be the most pivotal time for eSports,” MLG CEO and cofounder Sundance DiGiovanni said. “The Winter Season includes games built for competitive play, an event format and production level unparalleled in the industry and a passionate global fan base that continues to grow. Combine that with our TV-esque online broadcast, and we have everything needed for MLG and eSports to dominate the entertainment industry and appeal to an even broader audience"
With the first event taking place in Dallas along side $50,000 in take home prizes, the relevance, popularity, respect and exposure of e-sports is clearly rising by the day. With unprecedented support by the developers on both the development and marketing side, it comes as no surprise.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is the second game to be announced for the winter season, coming after "League of Legends." The third game to fill the ranks has yet to be announced, but its all but confirmed to be "StarCraft II". The first event takes place from March 15-17 at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas Texas. As always, the entire event will be live broadcasted on Twith.TV for the world to see.
E-sports is here everyone, and I would love to know your thoughts on it. Interested? I know recently there has been some fantastic changes to the rules that incorporates score-streaks and such into the professional series. Did it help?
Also, what are everyones thoughts on the focus of the developers this time? Feel like they should be spending more time getting their heavily criticized game to work properly? Let me know by subscribing to me here and following me on twitter @NicholasGigante.
