According to a Feb. 22 report in “Apple Insider”, you can now call your friends for free with the new update that Facebook just launched. Right now this free calling option is limited to phone numbers in the United States and Canada. But free is free!
How can these calls be free?
Through VoIP. VoIP works on your phone just like you're used to. The only difference is you get your calls through the Internet, not a phone company. Of course, for the call to be free, you must be using Wi-Fi (either your Wi-Fi or a public one). If your phone is connected to a cellular network, this call will use data.
Before this update, you could only use this free calling feature in Facebook's Messenger app. Now, with this update, the calling friends for free option is available in the main Facebook app too.
To call a Facebook friend, just open the app. On the main Facebook page, tap the top-right menu and tap a friend's name. Tap the “i” at the top and “Free Call”. If this “Free Call” button is grayed out, it means the friend hasn't provide a phone number yet.
To enter your mobile phone number so your friends can call you, tap the top-left main menu on the front page, settings and privacy, then text messaging, and finally, activate another phone.
Other new feature in this update include:
-
“Improved buttons to like, comment and share posts in New Feed.”
-
“Share button to re-post stories from your News Feed now available in all languages”
Tap or click on iPad Examiner to get free apps and games for your iPad, iPod touch and iPhone as well as the latest Apple news, rumors and deals.
