Call for a kidney

According to Julia Rivera, a spokeswoman for the New York Donor Network, someone in the state dies every 15 hours while waiting for an organ transplant. One man, hoping that he will not become such a statistic is Matthew Botchler, 37, of Selden (Long Island), who is in desperate need to find a living donor willing to provide him with a desperately needed kidney.

Botchler, who was born with a rare medical condition in which his muscular urinary sac had developed outside of his pelvic area and had to be removed as a child, and later developed Stage 1 colon cancer in 2012, learned last July that his kidneys were only functioning at 13%. Unfortunately, none of his family, nor his finance have tested as a positive match to be a donor. He has now been told he will have to find a stranger, himself. As a result, he has set up a facebook page, Matt’s Kidney Kampaign, where people can learn more about his story and contact him directly.

There are currently more than 100,000 people in need of kidneys throughout the US. Yet there are not enough cadavers or living donors to meet the demand. However, Joel Newman of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), which oversees the procurement of organs from deceased donors, as well as writes policy regarding living donors. Although a non-profit organization, the United Network for Organ Sharing operated under contract with the federal government, says there may be a way for those awaiting transplants to “exchange” donors with someone in a similar situation in another state.

“This has happened successfully for years,” he noted.
