According to a press release from the Riverside County, Calif., Sheriff's Department, a woman has been arrested for felony animal cruelty after a deceased dog was found inside of her vehicle on Monday night.

After discovering the body of a dog locked inside of a vehicle in the area of Vista Del Norte and Dillon Road, authorities arrested 29-year-old Charu Cata Khanna, who is believed to have left the dog inside of the car, with the windows rolled up, for over a day.

The knowledge about the extended period of time that the dog is believed to have suffered inside of the vehicle was the result of Coachella Police interviews with employees in the area where the car was found.

Coachella Police would like to encourage the public to immediately call 911 if they see an animal in distress within an unattended vehicle. Temperatures inside of parked vehicles can rise to a deadly level in a short period of time.

Khanna was taken to jail and the body of the dog was removed by Riverside County animal control.
