According to Thursday's publication of the Santa Clarita Valley Signal, a woman is facing animal cruelty charges for allegedly abusing, and seriously injuring, a pit bull mix in an area of unincorporated Los Angeles, Calif.

According to SVC News, deputies were alerted to the situation on Monday by someone who phoned in a report of possible animal abuse. Deputies were able to speak with residents in the area and ultimately found a residence where an injured dog could be seen through a window.

The owner of the dog, 41-year-old Desiree Lenore Martinez, was arrested after the dog was discovered with severe injuries to his head and eyes; the dog was allegedly beaten with a weapon which had been fashioned out of a rock and shoe laces.

According to the district attorney's office, the dog was so injured that he could barely move. The wounded dog was taken in, and is being cared for by the Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control.

Martinez pleaded not guilty to the two felony charges against her; she is due back in court on Feb. 24.

Martinez could spend up to four years in prison if she is convicted.
