California Theatre in San Jose

When days are short and cold weather is upon us, indoor entertainment seems the best option to live through winter. Go to California Theatre in downtown San Jose. Home to Opera San Jose and Symphony Silicon Valley, this beautiful example of the 1920s has a long and quite interesting history.

Built in 1927 as the Fox Theatre, a Hollywood motion pictures house, it was said to be ‘the finest theater in California’ on its opening day. The décor of the Jazz era typical of ornate theaters that were all over the country back in the 1920s and 1930s, was at its best.

Over the years the theatre housed vaudeville shows and featured 3D and Cinemascope. In the 1960s and 1970s, the building passed through several owners and closed in 1973. For years California Theatre sat vacant, until its reopening in 2004 after a $75 million dollar restoration project.

Today the California Theatre, filled with modern amenities, serves as a major performing art facility and a popular venue to hold events. Apple chose the California Theatre for its product announcement in 2004 and 2012.
