Nearly 700 members of California’s Conservation Camp Initiative are currently helping to fight the Yosemite national Park fire. California’s Conservation Camp Initiative is a joint effort between the California Department of Corrections and the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. This voluntary program allows inmates to work as firefighters. They earn $1.00 per hour. California has 42 camps with nearly 4,000 inmates involved in the program (California – Huffington Post, 8/30/2013).
