With a surprise win for Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain in Florida, the search for a competitor against Obama seems up in the air, but who are California Republicans thinking?
California Straw Poll
Yes, California Republicans did indeed conduct a straw poll on September 17, 2011. Of the potential candidates, Congressman Ron Paul came out on top with a dominate 44.9 percent of the vote.
Following far behind was Governor Rick Perry with 29.3 percent, and even further behind was sometimes California resident, Mitt Romney with 8.8 percent. Click here for the full results.
Endorsements
Some big players in the Republican arena have begun to issue endorsements. Republican Congressman Darrell Issa, who represents parts of San Diego County announced his endorsement of former Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney (who coincidentally owns a home in San Diego County).
But who are typical Californians leaning towards?
A poll done in August by the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences/Los Angeles Times, found that a majority of California’s registered Republicans favor Romney (23 percent) or Perry (33 percent). Why the straw poll this month swung towards Congressman Paul probably has more to do with the actual straw poll participants rather then a shift is statewide opinion.
The same poll showed that California still swings heavily for President Obama, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. Despite recent dips in approval among Californians, the President beat potential Republican candidates by a margin ranging from 19 points (Romney) to 26 points (Bachman).
