A Richmond, California man attempting to rescue his dog died New Year's Day. The California man and his wife were walking along the beach at Point Reyes National Seashore when the dog was swept out to sea by a rogue wave. The San Francisco area couple were on a day trip when the accident occurred along North Beach. The man, identified as Charles Francis Quaid, 59, was drawn out to sea by the surf.
He was knocked down and was quickly pulled out to sea by the current, according to witnesses. His body was recovered some hours later, authorities said.
Bystanders pulled Quaid's wife Lisa from the water after the pair was swept away around 12:30 p.m., Marin County Fire officials said. But the man tried to save his dog.
The ocean was rough along the seashore New Year day . Witnesses reported waves were reaching 20 feet. One witness said the three were knocked down by the same wave.
A person nearby managed to retrieve the woman while her husband made an attempt to save the dog.
The Coast Guard located the victim's body after a three-hour search. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
