California man bludgeoned sleeping son to death with a hatchet

Why would a father in California take a hatchet and use it to bludgeon his young son while he was sleeping?

Phillip Raymond Hernandez, 36, allegedly murdered his 9-year-old son, Raymond Hernandez, while the boy’s great-grandmother watched in dismay, said police.

According to the Huffington Post, the child was asleep on the couch when his father ended his life.

His great-grandmother explained that she begged the father to stop “the brutal assault.” However, he knocked her out of the way and commanded her to be quiet.

She was able to dial 911, but when the police arrived the boy was already dead.

“The suspect was taken into custody and remains at the Sacramento County Main Jail. He will be arraigned Friday.”

Police say Hernandez killed the boy because he was in a custody battle with his ex-wife, Jessica Hernandez. They had two sons together. “The couple's other boy, a 12-year-old, was at home during the incident but was not injured. His mother, who lives out of state, is said to now be with him.”

The pair had joint custody of the children, but then they both wanted “sole custody” of them.

According to the Sacramento Bee, the boys lived with their mother in the summer and stayed with their father for the other months.

Now the family is mourning the loss of Raymond Hernandez.
