California mall shooting: Mission Valley Mall shooting leaves 1 dead,1 critical

After a California mall shooting left one person dead and another in critical condition, San Diego police investigators are still in search of a motive and suspect. The Mission Valley shooting on Christmas Eve underscores how important it is for shoppers to be vigilant during the holiday season, especially if this is a random crime, citing a Dec. 25 NewsOxy report.

A shooting at the California mall is one of the last things you'd hear about in this area, as many describe it as a relatively quiet and "safe" place to shop.

Normally, the most excitement you see here is bumper accidents on this little intersection," said Jerry Hill, who supervises a Christmas tree outlet at the mall.

Nonetheless, 911 dispatchers received a distress call from a woman in the early morning hours after midnight. Apparently, she had been shot in the head and upper body, but still managed to provide her location: near the Westfield mall.

When first responders arrived, they found a woman's lifeless body in a Toyota Camry and another male victim, who sustained gunshot wounds about the head and torso. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment after receiving severe wounds.

Family members say the surviving victim is 22-year-old Salvatore Belvedere and the dead woman is the man's brother's fiance. Furthermore, sources say that man, Gianni Belvedere, was with the couple at the mall and has since gone missing. However, police are stopping short of calling him a suspect or victim of a crime.

Police reviewed surveillance footage and described a possible suspect as 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-11 tall and was last seen wearing tan pants. His race/ethnicity was not given. Additionally, a possible vehicle linked to the suspect is a 2008-2011 dark gray Honda sedan, according to a San Diego police spokesperson on the shooting at the Westfield mall.

The California mall shooting comes on the heels of another incident in which a young attorney and wife were the victims of a violent carjacking at The Mall at Short Hills. Dustin Friedland lost his life in that case, but four suspects have been arrested behind the fatal incident.

Moreover, the San Diego mall shooting happened nearly two months after a man opened fire at the Westfield Garden State Plaza mall in New Jersey without hitting anyone, but later committing suicide. Investigators believe the man wanted to end his life by police shooting.

The California mall shooting shook up shoppers, but many expressed comfort in knowing there is a larger police presence in the wake of the fatal shooting.

This story is developing.
