A stretch of I-8 near Campo will soon be dedicated to Border Patrol Agent Robert Rosas, who was brutally murdered by Mexican assassins near the border on July 23, 2009. Two large memorial signs will be installed along I-8, one on each side of the highway.
The effort for the memorial highway was started last year by members of the San Diego Minutemen who live in east San Diego County and wanted to honor Agent Rosas and the ultimate sacrifice he made while guarding our country in their dangerous, high-smuggling region. They have set up a website for the memorial highway, along with information about Agent Rosas and the other memorials dedicated to him at the Campo border. The local Border Patrol erected a large memorial cross in 2009 at the site where Rosas was killed and the Minutemen planted a memorial pine tree in honor of Rosas at the border in western Campo last summer (see slide show).
California State Senator Joel Anderson (El Cajon), a long-time advocate for stronger border security in California, is sponsoring the resolution in the state legislature for the Agent Rosas Memorial Highway. Once the resolution is approved, Caltrans will officially name the highway and install the signs. Memorial highway signs for law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in California are privately funded and the $4500 needed to construct and install these signs has already been raised by the local border patrol union along with some citizen and group donations. The funds will be paid directly to Caltrans for the cost of the signs.
The memorial highway signs for Agent Rosas are projected to be installed within the next 2-3 months.
