California has new political party

Americans Elect on Monday became the seventh political party to qualify to field candidates for president and vice president in the November 2012 election, the California secretary of state's office announced.

Americans Elect will nominate candidates during next June via Internet vote.

The committee was required to gather at least 1,030,040 signatures of registered California voters to get ballot access.

The new committee largely perceives itself as centrist.

"To ensure the winning ticket is committed to working together across party lines, finalist candidates are required to choose a running mate from a party other than their own," its website says. "With Americans Elect, voters will nominate a nonpartisan ticket that puts country before party, and American interests before special interests."

Among its leaders are Carla Hills, former U.S. Trade Representative, and William Webster, a former FBI and CIA chief.

Former Gov. Buddy Roemer of Louisiana, currently a low-key candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, has expressed interest in the nomination.

Roemer has referred to himself as a "moderate libertarian."

Other parties on the ballot are the Democratic, Republican, American Independent, Green, Libertarian, and Peace and Freedom parties.
