California Feeling — Part 6, "You're The Beautiful"

This is the sixth installment for the new compilation California Feeling. Today Stephen Kalinich and Alan Boyd discuss track #17, “You’re The Beautiful.”

Alan Boyd: As you'll recall, this one has been around for a while; it was first released on a wonderful Endless Summer Quarterly compilation One In A Million back in 2004, and later that year I included it on the Channel Surfing album. We chose it for this new compilation because, out of the handful of songs I’ve written with Steve over the years, this one has always gotten the most positive response. It’s a very positive song – I guess you could say its about appreciating someone (or even, something) precious... acknowledging and appreciating something that is beautiful in whatever way or form that one might find beauty, inside or out. And that concept of appreciation is a very big part of Steve’s philosophy and his message... and it is something that has resonated with me over the years. I’ve learned a lot from Stevie about taking the time to smell the roses, if you know what I mean. I can’t begin to tell you the number of times his words have come back to me during times of stress or anxiety, and enabled me to step back, step out of the mental chaos, and instantly gain a healthier perspective on the world!

Stephen Kalinich: “You’re the Beautiful,” to me, is a masterpiece. I can’t tell you how beautiful the music is. Alan told me that I was the catalyst to bringing him out. Also, he was helping me. Really, what I am saying and what Brian’s saying is: You’ve got to have the music come alive in you; you’ve got to have the spirit come alive in you; you’ve got to have the truth, the feeling, the touch come alive in you where you are. [The truth is] I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. It comes out: the lyrics. These things that I’m telling you are after-thoughts. It’s so spontaneous (and) it’s so magical as it’s coming. There’s no thought process. It’s instant love moving through my experience. Alan Boyd is a monster [talent]. He is so good! Even though we turned this song into a love song to a woman, it was originally written as a love song to America to counteract all the ugliness [from 9/11]. I love it man! I’m so thrilled over it. I’m just honored.
