“Polemics, Poetry and Peace”
David Marks w/ Stephen Kalinich
This is the fifth installment for the new compilation California Feeling. Today Stephen Kalinich and David Marks discuss track #9, “Polemics, Poetry and Peace.”
Stephen Kalinich: What a great experience! David is a great talent, and is someone I love working with. He can write so many ways and comes up with great ideas. David’s music captures the energy, the excitement and the beat of life. This track is fun too, and he presents the ideas in a unique way.
Q: Why did you to choose to submit this song?
David Marks: I chose to submit “Polemics, Poetry and Peace” because it’s an example of Stephen’s ability to get an audience to hang on his every word; the music is there to support him. The first time I heard him recite it I was captured into the bubble he’s able to suck the audience into and I have been a fan and friend of his ever since, so I wanted to pick a song that captured what first drew me towards his poetry in the first place.
Q: What inspires you the most about Stephen's writing?
DM: There is an endless flow of words coming from Stevie and I am inspired by the way he’s able to draw upon words at any time and can passionately capture any experience… Stevie and I have written about a dozen songs together and we’ve worked all different ways. Sometimes we wrote all new material together in person, other times his poems inspired me to write brand new music to go with his words. Some songs, like “Polemics, Poetry and Peace,” came about by combining my existing music with his existing words. Being able to have access to Stevie’s mind opened up so many different creative doors and I really enjoy having someone like him as a collaborator.
