California campfire permits are free permissions-to-burn, issued for each calendar year. Pick them up at national forest offices, national parks, BLM offices and California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection offices around the state.
California campfire permits require you to understand fire safety rules
To obtain a permit, you're simply required to read and sign that you've understood the rules, promise you will always have water and a shovel on hand, and give contact details. Additionally, a responsible person (i.e. an adult) must be present, and you have must clear at least five feet around the fire of anything flammable.
After burning, you are required to drown the fire, stir it and check for embers, and to repeat until the fire is dead out.
Free California campfire permits available at public lands offices
Having a permit does not trump common sense and, especially, does not trump individual fire restrictions. It's up to you, as a boondocking campfire-builder, to know whether individual areas are currently restricting fires to developed sites only.
Always check with the local public lands office or website to figure out what restrictions are in place. You are also always welcome to call and ask.
