California Cabernet drinks like a Classic Bordeaux

Joseph Carr Cabernet Sauvignon truly reflects the unique terroir of the Napa Valley.
Joseph Carr Winery

Joseph Carr was an award-winning Sommelier and international wine industry executive who set out on his own in 2005 and founded Joseph Carr Winery in Carneros, California. It was, as Mr. Carr says, a chance to follow a dream. “We’re a family owned company dedicated to making world class, handcrafted wines. We work with small growers, coopers and winemakers producing elegant, sophisticated, yet approachable wines from Napa Valley, Carneros, and the North Coast of California.”

Joseph Carr Cabernet Sauvignon truly reflects the unique terroir of the Napa Valley, yet it drinks like a classic Bordeaux style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Joseph Carr is known for traditionally blended Cabernet featuring Cabernet Franc and Merlot. As a winemaker, he strives to make balanced, sophisticated, yet approachable Bordeaux style blends by using a trilogy of grapes from where they grow best, referred to as “Trois Cépages,” meaning these Californians are stylistically very different. The first thing you notice about this deep purple-hued wine is that it has great clarity for wine that is traditionally unfiltered.

The blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and this wine has more of a classical, level approach with a beginning, a middle and an end.

The beginning aromas offers scents of ripe black currant, smoke and saddle leather, followed by a complex blend of ripe fruit flavors; black currant, dark cherry, blueberry, ripe plum, a hint of vanilla, cocoa dust and a spicy note overlaid with gentle oak nuances.

In the middle you notice that this is a medium-bodied, balanced, and very approachable
Cabernet. The tannin structure is firm and it accents a balanced and lingering finish all the way through to the end of the glass.

The best part? It’s a delicious wine at an affordable price. This wine is extremely food-friendly and would pair well with veal parmigianna, any red-sauced pasta dish and red meats, or you can just sit and sip it on its own with a friend or two.

You can find this wine at Circus Wines/Spirits Unlimited, 835 State Highway 35,
Middletown, NJ 07748.
