According to a press release from the Canadian Women's Hockey League on Monday, the top women's hockey team in Calgary now has a new name.
For the start of the 2013-14 Canadian Women's Hockey League season, the club will now be recognized as the Calgary Inferno. Last year the club was simply known as the Alberta Hockey Club.
The Inferno, which plays their home games at the Markin MacPhail Centre at Calgary's Canada Olympic Park, formed a major sponsorship with the Calgary Flames in November of 2012. The Inferno will be wearing uniforms that have similar colours of the Calgary Flames and will start their season on November 9 in Toronto. The Inferno will also host the Toronto Furies in their home opener on November 29. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
The Inferno logo meanwhile was unveiled at the Scotiabank Saddledome prior to the Flames' 4-1 pre-season victory over the New York Rangers. With the win, the Flames improved their pre-season record to four wins and two losses. The Flames will close out their pre-season schedule Wednesday evening at the Scotiabank Saddledome against the Phoenix Coyotes.
