Green Calgary is hosting their annual rain barrel sale on May 1, 2010 from 9-11 am.
For those of you not yet in the know, a rain barrel or rainwater tank is just that - a tank that is used to collect and store rain water runoff, typically from rooftops via rain gutters. The stored water may be used for watering gardens, agriculture, washing cars as well as many other household uses.
Not only does using harvested rain water for your landscaping and yard work help the environment by limiting our use of potable (consumable) water, it also cuts down on our water bill! Consider too that the stormwater going into our drains is also cut down, eliminating the water damage and flooding caused by Calgary's infamous flash floods and overzealous percipitation systems. Consider this a baby step in your new green lifestyle!
The rain barrels being sold are 45-gallon food grade plastic barrels, fitted with two taps and a screened hole for the downspout, for ease of use.
Rainbarrels sell for $80 including GST, and sell out each year. It is recommended to reserve yours in advance. One in four Calgarians has a rain barrel, let's see if we can make it 4 out of 4!
And as a cherry on top, all proceeds of the rain barrel sale support Green Calgary's community and youth environmental education programs. Save the enviroment, cut down on your water bill, and educate our youth on the importance of living green! Now that's a way to spend a Saturday!
