Calgarians who will compete at 2014 Winter Olympics

Accordng to the Canadian Olympic Committee in a press release on Wednesday, there will be 31 Canadian athletes who call Calgary and area home who will compete at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

The Calgarians will be led by bobsled driver and defending Olympic gold medalist Kaillie Humphries, who is also the defending World Cup champion and World Champion. Humphries is the favourite to defend her gold medal.

Another former gold medalist is cross-country skier Chanda Crawford of Canmore (an hour west of Calgary), who won the women's sprint at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin.

There is also a lot of excitement surrounding Alex Gough, who could make history by becoming the first Canadian luger to win an Olympic medal. She will also be part of a strong mixed relay team that also is fully Calgarian which includes Justin Snith, Sam Edney and Tristan Walker.

Other significant medal hopefuls are men's ski cross racer Brady Leman, who has won two World Cup bronze medals this year; speed skater Gilmore Junio, who has a World Cup win in the men's 500m this year to go along with a bronze medal in the men's 500m at the 2013 World Sprint Speed Skating Championships; skeleton athlete Sarah Reid who won the bronze medal at the 2013 World Championships and 2011 women's ski halfpipe world champion Rosalind Groenewoud.

There are also six ski jumpers--Atsuko Tanaka, Alexandra Pretorious, Taylor Henrich, Dusty Korek, Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes and Trevor Morrice; three more speed skaters--Anastasia Bucsis, Kaylin Irvine and Brianne Tutt of Airdrie; men's halfpipe skier Noah Bowman; alpine skiers Trevor Philp and Brad Spence; snowboard cross racer Chris Robanske; biathletes Nathan Smith and Rosanna Crawford of Canmore; lugers Kim McRae, Arianne Jones, Mitchel Malyk and John Fennell and cross country skiers Heidi Widmer of Banff and Jesse Cockney of Canmore.
