According to the Calgary Sun, Calgary-based bobsledder Derek Plug has received a two year suspension for taking a banned anabolic agent.
A sample taken on September 17, 2012 shows that Plug had SARM S-22 in his system. The drug test was not taken during any specific competition.
Plug, who has competed in various two-man and four-man World Cups and at the World Bobsled Championships for Canada, plans to exercise his right for an appeal.
Under current regulations, Plug cannot compete in any other sport that follows the Canadian Anti-Doping Program, and cannot compete in the sport of bobsledding in competition until 2014.
SARM, according to www.ergogenics.org, stands for selective androgen receptor modulators. The agent is expected to improve muscle strength, energy and sexual performance upon use.
Testing for agents such as SARM is just the latest effort by the World Anti-Doping Agency's plan to eliminate all illegal substances in sports that are proven to give athletes a competitive advantage against their opponents.
