As the New Year unfolds, the calendar of events in Puerto Rico promises an exciting season, filled with a variety of events to celebrate friendship, health, love, music, sports, and life in general. It’s a perfect month to meet new people, reunite with old friends, or maybe, take some time for yourself to regain perspective and recharge your batteries in this beautiful Island with so much to offer. Here’s a list of some of the most interesting events during February 2014:
Feb. 1: Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra presents Gala de Zarzuela – Under the direction of Roselín Pabón, enjoy the voices of Young Puerto Rican singers performing a Zarzuela repertoire selection at 7 p.m. at the Symphony hall in Centro de Bellas Artes in San Juan. Ticket prices range from $20 to $40 upon seating preferences, and may be purchased online through Ticketpop.
Feb. 1 & 2: The Original Harlem Globe Trotters “Fans Rule” World Tour – Witness these exceptional athletes achieve compliance with new creative basketball rules selected by fans. Tickets for performances at Coliseum José. M. Agrelot in San Juan at 3 p.m. or 8 p.m., range from $20 to $125, and may be purchased online through Ticketpop. Tickets for performance in Quebradillas’ Coliseum on Feb 2 at 4 p.m. are $33 and may be purchased online through TicketCenter.
Feb 7-9: Puerto Rico Tango Marathon - 8 amazing DJ's and many wonderful dancers will get together at Casa Cuba in Isla Verde, starting at 4 p.m. on Friday, and at 12 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Registration price ranges from $105 to $130 per person and include admission to the marathon and snacks ($130 tickets also include brunch and dinner). *Female registration is now closed. Couples and male registrations arte still open.
Feb. 8: Mojito Fest - Original from Cuba, this cocktail will be the starting point to this event to be held at Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m. Tropical music, exhibitions with professional salsa dancers, tasting booths, and a contest to select the best Mojito will be held that night. Feb. 8: Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra presents Cuentos de Misterio y Locura (Tales of Mystery and Madness) – Under the direction of Maximiliano Valdés, enjoy Luis Miguel Rojas play the violoncello performing Jack Delano’s La Bruja de Loiza folk dance music; Mozart’s Symphony No. 33 in B flat major, K. 319; and Strauss’ Don Quixote, Op. 35. Concert starts at 7 p.m. at the Symphony hall in Centro de Bellas Artes in San Juan. Ticket prices range from $20 to $40 upon seating preferences, and may be purchased online through Ticketpop.
Feb 12-16: Puerto Rico Freefall Festival in Arecibo - Come party Caribbean style at the Puerto Rico Freefall Festival and have a blast jumping with old and new friends from 13,500 feet out of the two Supper Otters. Celebrated in February every year with live band entertainment, catering, free fly coaching and organized big way relative jumps, tandems, and more, this year’s festival will be held at Antonio “Nery” Juarbe Airport in Arecibo. Feb. 22: Raúl Di Blasio in Concert - Born in Argentina and considered the best piano in America, Raúl Di Blasio returns to Puerto Rico to celebrate the month of love with a special presentation in Centro de Bellas Artes in Caguas. Ticket prices range from $71 to $91 and may be purchased online through TicketCenter.
Feb 22, 23 & 27: Casals Festival - Founded by the famous cellist, conductor and composer Pablo Casals, San Juan brings annually the most outstanding musical talent in the world. Celebrating 58 years of its foundation, under the artistic direction of Maestro Maximiliano Valdés, this year the festival will be featuring renowned artists like violinist Joshua Bell during its opening night on Feb 22 at 8 p.m.; Fine Arts Quartet on Feb 23 at 4 p.m.; and international acclaimed Russian violinist, Viktoria Mullova on Feb 27 at 8 p.m. Tickets available on Ticketpop. Ticket prices vary per function.
Feb. 23: World’s Best 10K Race - The World's Best 10K (WB10K) has become an entire weekend of events for all participants to enjoy with family and friends. Among the different weekend activities are: the Fitness Festival on Feb. 21 & 22 at Roberto Clemente Coliseum; Duathlon at 7 a.m. on Feb 23; the Kids Mini Race on Feb 23 at 11 a.m.; and the World’s Best 10K at 5:25 p.m. on Feb 23 at Teodoro Moscoso Bridge in San Juan.
