On Saturday, Caledonia Lady (10-1 betting odds) got a narrow victory over Confessional to win the Group 3 Coral Charge at Sandown Park. Trainer Joe Hughes got his first Group win.
Jockey Hayley Turner seized a gap near the final furlong and Caledonia finally got a clear run. Free Zone raced to third place while Spirit Quartz ended up in fourth.
“I've only been training for 12 months and she has given me my first Listed winner last year and now my first Group race. She's a really good filly, she didn't have the run of the race in the King's Stand at Ascot but was closing at the end,” said Hughes.
Also on Saturday, Great Heavens took a decisive victory in the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks at Haydock. An hour later, Great Heavens’ full-sister Nathaniel emerged victorious at the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown, giving co-owner Lady Rothschild a double victory.
Great Heavens, a John Gosden-trained 11-4 favourite, made it three wins in as many starts this season. Jockey Rab Havlin would tell reporters afterwards: “I gave her a squeeze early enough but she stays well. She was getting weight off the older horses, so I thought that I would make it count and she seems to be improving. She is a no-nonsense filly who is very resilient and very tough.”
Shimmering Sea (7-1 betting odds) stood no chance in the final furlong and was beaten five lengths at the line. Set To Music (3-1 odds) finished third.
