Caldas Grand Reserve
aged rum from Colombia
This eight year old rum is fermented from sugar cane honey (syrup), rather than molasses, using the full compliment of sugar compounds of the cane juice to produce a flavorful spirit. It's not a blend, but rather an exclusive vintage aged at 7,000 feet altitude in hand-made artisan oak cask barrels.
Caldas Grand Reserve is a golden amber color medium bodied spirit with a notable viscosity and light, delicate legs on the tasting glass. Pale aromas of dried fruits and nuts, subtle sherry and vanilla with toffee and light smoke are revealed. The initial taste is not overwhelming with delicate hints of banana, caramel, toasted oak and bourbon. The long warm finish is barely sweet with a hint of pepper in the end.
As a fine sipping rum, the Grand Reserve is well balance and delicate. On the rocks, a bit more sweetness is revealed mid-palette as maple. In cocktails which allow a fine rum to play through without being overwhelmed, Grand Reserve offers a uniquely discernable and satisfying bouquet of rum flavor.
The suggested retail price of Caldas Grand Reserve is $21.99 for a 750ml bottle.
In 1926, Cuban rum distiller Don Ramón Badia was commissioned by the Caldas Fine Liquor and Perfume Company to create their first high quality rum. Two years later, Ron Viejo de Caldas was launched with local distribution.
In 1959 the company established the Ron de Alturas factory near Saboya, which was then expanded and modernized in 1968. The company can currently produce in excess of 25 million bottles a year.
In addition to the premium Grand Reserve rum, Caldas produces a popular and affordable three year old rum.
Caldas rums for Colombia are imported in the U.S. by Shaw-Ross International Importers.
